Carnival Museum

The Badajoz carnival enjoys an extraordinary social implantation, which is explained by the solidarity and the impulse that arises from the bosom of the groups, families and friends.

The Badajoz Carnival Museum is conceived as a living and dynamic museum that shows how our carnivals are lived and enjoyed. It is a place where Badajoz participate exhibiting beautiful costumes, musical compositions, ingenious lyrics and artifacts. The effects of light, sound and the atmosphere enhance and enhance the carnival heritage. A modern, attractive and spectacular space for “collective memory” that is located in a historic building in Badajoz: La Poterna.

Lobby: Welcome

Surprising and striking contact, in which visitors can “dress up” thanks to silhouettes that reproduce three costumes from the Badajoz carnival that, through mirrors, return their transformed images.

Sector 0. Origin and evolution of Carnival.

This space shows how Carnival has been lived over time, its evolution until the creation of the different groups and our representative Street Carnival.

Sector 1: Chronicle of the last Carnival.

Upon entering the first exhibition hall we have the feeling of being in the streets of Badajoz participating in the Badajoz carnival with the costumes of the last year. The sound, the color and the carnival atmosphere will catch our attention. It is a scenographic and projection space that shows the most spectacular and significant moments of the last edition of the carnival.

This is a party that invades the streets of Badajoz every year with its costumes, choreographies, murgas, comparsas, minor groups and artifacts. A celebration in which tradition, fun, mockery, irony and wit are mixed.

Sector 2: Carnival throughout the year.

The second sector is distributed over two exhibition rooms. The first takes us to a “workshop” space, to an environment that evokes the frenetic but joyous activity that involves the making of costumes, musical lyrics and artifacts. Fabrics, buttons, glue, feathers, hats, sketches, designs… make up a scenographic environment that is complemented by graphic supports and audio stations that allow you to hear stories of the carnival men.

The second room evokes a quiet space in which accessories, costume parts, hats, percussion instruments, etc. are displayed. On this occasion, you have the opportunity to learn about the moments, curious situations, activities, events and parties that take place during the carnival and the rest of the year. The gay, funny, satirical and mocking songs of the murgas can be heard through individual audio devices.

Carnival is a way of life and, as such, marks the idiosyncrasy and rhythm of the city. Throughout the year, Badajoz people work with enthusiasm to make each new Carnival surpass the previous one.

Sector 3: Building the Memory of Carnival.

In this room a selection of the innumerable costumes that have been worn on the streets of Badajoz in recent years is exhibited. The task has not been easy given its high quality. Those exposed here are a worthy representation of our Carnival.

This sector takes place in the last two exhibition rooms.

The first is a very powerful theatrical and scenographic space in which the lighting and a series of special effects recreate a spectacular atmosphere, which enhances the selection of the best costumes that have participated in the Badajoz carnival.

The second combines a collection of Carnival Barbies and hats from recent years. An educational and leisure space dedicated to the little ones is presented, with interactive screens and machines dedicated to learning about the different instruments used by the Carnival groups.

Sector 4: Badajoz, city of Carnivals.

To conclude, this space offers us a graphic history of the Badajoz carnivals taking advantage of the oldest historical documents and a city selection of the photographs collected among the different groups of carnivals and the private and public archives of the city.
